The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has officially released the seat matrix for the first round of the NEET PG 2026 counselling process. Candidates preparing for postgraduate medical admissions can now access the detailed vacancy list on the official website, mcc.nic.in, to assist in planning their college preferences.

This comprehensive seat matrix, provided in collaboration with the National Medical Commission (NMC), outlines the availability of MD and MS seats across various medical institutions in India. The data covers government, private, and deemed universities, allowing students to review clinical and non-clinical seat distributions on a state-by-state basis.

Understanding the Seat Distribution and Counselling Timeline

With the release of the seat matrix, candidates participating in the All India Quota (AIQ) counselling are encouraged to review the available positions thoroughly. This information is critical for students as they prepare to enter their choices. According to the official schedule, the choice-filling window is set to open on October 13, at which point students can lock in their preferred medical colleges based on the published seat availability.

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) under the NMC has confirmed a total of 63,177 postgraduate medical seats for the current academic session across 645 institutions. This figure represents a notable increase of 5,827 seats compared to the previous year, providing expanded opportunities for students seeking admission into competitive branches such as General Medicine, Radio-Diagnosis, and General Surgery.

Regional Breakdown of Medical Seats

The national distribution of seats shows a significant concentration in the southern and western regions of the country. Karnataka currently holds the highest number of postgraduate medical seats, with 8,323 spots available across 75 institutions. Maharashtra follows with 6,988 seats, while Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh report 6,306 and 6,082 seats, respectively.

Of the total 63,177 seats, approximately 33,000 are allocated to government medical colleges. Private institutions account for 21,892 seats, and deemed universities provide 8,197 seats. Candidates are advised to cross-reference these figures with the official PDF available on the MCC portal to ensure their preference lists align with the approved quotas before the upcoming deadline.
