Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani has announced a significant expansion of its financial aid programme for the upcoming 2027 academic session. The institute will now extend a 100% tuition fee waiver to the top 1,000 candidates who qualify through the BITSAT entrance examination, provided their annual family income does not exceed Rs 20 lakh. This move marks a substantial increase from the previous year, where the scholarship was limited to the top 500 rankers.
The initiative is designed to enhance accessibility for high-achieving students, ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent them from pursuing an undergraduate degree at BITS Pilani campuses in Pilani, Goa, or Hyderabad. By doubling the number of beneficiaries, the institution aims to attract a broader range of meritorious students who demonstrate academic excellence in the competitive BITSAT process.
To qualify for the full tuition fee waiver, students must meet both the rank criteria and the specified income threshold. Once admitted, the scholarship is not automatically guaranteed for the entire duration of the four-year undergraduate programme. Recipients are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 7.5 across their semesters to remain eligible for the continued financial support.
It is important for prospective students to note that this scholarship covers tuition fees exclusively. It does not extend to other institutional costs, such as hostel accommodation, admission fees, or additional campus charges. The decision to expand the scheme follows positive trends observed in the 2026 academic year, where the institute noted a 50% increase in the number of high-ranking candidates choosing to enroll at BITS Pilani after the introduction of the tuition-blind admission policy.
The expansion of the BITSAT scholarship is part of a broader institutional strategy to support students through various financial aid channels. During the 2025-26 academic year, BITS Pilani reported distributing approximately Rs 190 crore in total financial assistance, which included fellowships, fee concessions, and scholarships across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Of this total, Rs 101 crore was specifically directed toward undergraduate students.
According to Group Vice Chancellor V Ramgopal Rao, the institute’s financial aid efforts currently reach approximately one in four students across its campuses. As the 2027 admission cycle approaches, students are reminded that while meeting the BITSAT cutoff is a critical step in the admission process, it does not guarantee a seat. The final allotment of seats depends on various factors, and candidates will be notified of their status once the official seat allocation process is completed. Students are encouraged to monitor official BITS Pilani communications for further updates regarding the admission and counselling schedule.
