The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has unveiled a series of new initiatives designed to bolster the support system for its students. The launch includes the PREM (Parents’ Role in Encouraging and Mentoring) program, a dedicated wellness website, and a digital application for scheduling counselling appointments, all aimed at improving the overall academic and emotional well-being of the student body.

Recognizing that the transition from school to a rigorous college environment is a significant milestone for both students and their families, the institute developed the PREM initiative to bridge the communication gap. This program is intended to help parents better understand the evolving needs of their children and provide more effective emotional and academic encouragement throughout their time at the institute. As part of the program's introduction, IIT Madras hosted an interactive online session for parents, offering practical advice on mental health awareness and fostering supportive communication.

New Digital Platforms for Student Wellness

In addition to the parental engagement program, IIT Madras has launched the MiTR Wellness Website, a centralized digital hub for all student support services. The platform is designed to make resources more accessible, housing information such as faculty and hostel-wise student coordinators, emergency contact details, and various wellness initiatives. The website also serves as a repository for student experiences, alumni insights, and guidance from advisors, ensuring that students can easily navigate the support network available to them.

To further streamline access to mental health services, the institute has introduced a dedicated wellness application. This tool allows students to book confidential counselling sessions with professional wellness experts. A key feature of this system is the ability for students to choose their preferred professional and language, ensuring that the support provided is both comfortable and tailored to individual needs. Appointments can be scheduled directly through the Office of the Dean of Students website, reflecting the institute's commitment to making mental health resources more convenient and readily available to the entire campus community.
