
The Shri G S Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has officially launched a BTech programme in Civil Engineering taught in Hindi. This initiative, which aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, seeks to bridge the language gap for students transitioning from Hindi-medium schools to higher technical education.
The programme has been structured to accommodate 30 students in a dedicated Hindi-medium batch. According to the institute, approximately 20 students have already secured admission for the current academic session. By offering core engineering subjects in Hindi, the institute aims to remove the immediate hurdle of mastering complex technical terminology in English, which has historically been a significant challenge for many students.
The launch of this course follows a multi-year preparation phase by the faculty at SGSITS. Vivek Tiwari, an assistant professor in the Civil Engineering Department, noted that experts at the institute have spent the past four years translating technical study materials from English to Hindi. This effort is intended to ensure that students can grasp engineering concepts effectively while following their coursework in their native language.
To further encourage enrollment and retention, the Madhya Pradesh government has introduced a financial incentive for students enrolled in this specific batch. Eligible students are set to receive an incentive of INR 2 lakh during their final year of the BTech programme. This financial support is designed to motivate students to persist in their studies and successfully complete their engineering degrees.
The decision to introduce the Hindi-medium stream stems from observations made by the department regarding student performance. Sunil Ajmera, head of the Civil Engineering Department at SGSITS, explained that the institute identified a recurring pattern where students from Hindi-medium backgrounds struggled to comprehend engineering concepts when presented exclusively in English. In some instances, this language barrier was identified as a contributing factor to students dropping out of their courses.
By providing an alternative medium of instruction, the institute hopes to improve accessibility and academic outcomes for a broader range of students. The programme is scheduled to continue its expansion in the 2026-27 academic session, marking a significant shift in how technical education is delivered at the institution.
