The Supreme Court of India has declined an immediate, urgent hearing regarding a petition that challenges the decision to hold a re-examination for 2,445 candidates who were unable to complete the NEET PG 2026 entrance test. The plea was presented before a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, alongside Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana.

During the proceedings, the petitioner's legal counsel argued that the decision to conduct a separate examination for these specific candidates contradicts previous judicial rulings. The counsel sought an immediate intervention from the court to address the matter. However, the bench refused to grant an urgent listing, instead directing the legal team to approach the specific bench led by Justice PS Narasimha, which is currently overseeing all litigation related to medical entrance examinations.

Background of the NEET PG 2026 Re-examination

The controversy stems from technical disruptions that occurred during the NEET PG 2026 examination, which was conducted on August 30. While the vast majority of the 265,980 registered candidates successfully completed the test, a group of 2,445 students at the iON Digital Zone in Sitapura, Jaipur, were unable to finish their papers due to a sudden power failure at the centre.

In response to these technical issues, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) announced a re-examination specifically for the affected candidates. The petitioners are now challenging this administrative decision, claiming it violates established legal precedents regarding the conduct of such examinations. The Supreme Court's refusal to grant an urgent hearing means the matter will now follow the standard judicial protocol for NEET-related cases, with the petitioners required to move their application before the designated bench handling these specific disputes.
